Decimal Hours Calculator

Convert clock-style durations to decimal hours for timesheets and payroll systems — with live sync and batch export.

Single conversion

Updates live when the paired value is valid.

Hours:minutes (e.g. 8:30). Decimal hours use a point (e.g. 8.5).

Batch conversion

Enter hours:minutes per row (same Time format as single conversion); decimal hours update live. Export CSV after at least one valid row.

How it works

A decimal hours calculator converts clock time (hh:mm) to payroll decimal hours and back. Enter hours and minutes (for example 8:30) or decimal hours (for example 8.5). Valid entries update the paired field immediately. Use the batch table for multiple rows and export CSV when you are ready.

Formula: decimal hours = total minutes ÷ 60, rounded to the nearest minute when converting from decimal back to hh:mm. Remember: 8.5 means 8:30, not 8:50.

Quick steps

  1. Enter hours and minutes (hh:mm) or a decimal hours value.
  2. Watch the paired field update live when the entry is valid.
  3. Add batch rows for multiple conversions on one screen.
  4. Export CSV for spreadsheet paste (plain values, no formulas).
  5. Use Hours & Minutes instead if you need to add or subtract durations.

When to use this tool

Use Decimal Hours for unit conversion only — when payroll or a spreadsheet expects 8.5 instead of 8:30. Use Hours & Minutes to add or subtract duration rows, and Timesheet when you already work in decimal hours on a weekday grid and need row/column totals plus CSV rather than a one-off conversion.

Common mix-up: people treat the digits after the decimal as minutes. They are fractional hours, so 0.25 is fifteen minutes and 0.75 is forty-five minutes. The live pair field and the 8.5 ≠ 8:50 FAQ are there to catch that before you export.

Worked example

8:30 → 8.5 decimal hours. 8:50 → about 8.83 decimal hours. Batch three payroll rows and export CSV for spreadsheet paste — values only, without spreadsheet formulas.

Methodology & assumptions

Conversions use integer minutes internally: decimal = minutes ÷ 60; reverse conversion rounds to the nearest whole minute. This tool does not add or subtract duration rows — use Hours & Minutes for that. See calculation methodology.

FAQ

Is 8.5 the same as 8:50?
No. 8.5 decimal hours is 8:30. Eight hours and fifty minutes is about 8.83 decimal hours.
Where is my data stored?
Decimal Hours runs locally in your browser. Only display preferences may be saved on this device — conversion rows are not uploaded.
Can I export a batch for spreadsheets?
Yes. Use Export CSV on the batch table to download plain hh:mm and decimal values with formula-injection neutralization for safe paste.
