Hours & Minutes Calculator

Add and subtract durations in hours and minutes — ideal for breaks, segments, and running totals.

Durations

Add durations and choose + or − for each row, then Calculate.

Enter each duration as hours:minutes (e.g. 2:30 or 13:30). Values are lengths of time, not clock times of day.

Ready when you Calculate

Enter durations and press Calculate to see the total.

How it works

An hours and minutes calculator adds and subtracts duration rows in hh:mm — it does not convert to payroll decimals. Enter each duration as hh:mm, choose + or −, then Calculate. The total uses the same duration arithmetic as our engine; signed totals are allowed when subtractions exceed additions.

Calculate runs when you press the button (not on every keystroke). For hh:mm ↔ decimal payroll conversion, use the Decimal Hours Calculator instead.

Quick steps

  1. Enter the first duration as hours and minutes (hh:mm).
  2. Choose + to add or − to subtract that row.
  3. Add more rows for breaks, segments, or adjustments.
  4. Press Calculate for a signed hh:mm total.
  5. Copy or export CSV if you need the result elsewhere.

When to use this tool

Use Hours & Minutes to combine duration segments — meeting blocks, travel legs, or a break you want subtracted from a running total. Use Decimal Hours when a payroll system needs decimal hours, and Work Hours when you start from clock-in/out times rather than raw durations.

The calculator waits for Calculate so incomplete rows do not flicker into a wrong total. Signed results are intentional: overshooting with − rows yields a leading minus, which is useful when reconciling adjustments instead of silently clamping to zero.

Worked example

+2:30 and +1:45 → 4:15 total. Subtract 0:15 → 4:00. If you subtract more than you add, the total shows a leading minus.

Methodology & assumptions

Each row converts to integer minutes; the result is the signed sum of + and − rows, then formatted back to hh:mm. No pay, overtime, or decimal-payroll conversion. See calculation methodology.

FAQ

How do I subtract a break?
Add each worked segment with the + operator and the break duration with −, then press Calculate for the net hh:mm total.
Why is Calculate disabled?
Fix any invalid row or enter at least one valid duration. Empty rows alone do not produce a total.
Can the total be negative?
Yes. If subtractions exceed additions, the total shows a leading minus (for example −0:15).
Does this convert to decimal hours?
No — this tool adds and subtracts durations. Use the Decimal Hours Calculator for hh:mm ↔ decimal payroll conversion.
